FIVE FACTS: UK MEDICAL UNIFORMS

In the UK, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) offer clear guidance on uniforms and work wear. The RCN say “uniforms give nurses a recognisable identity that helps to promote public trust and confidence”.

The RCN identify infection prevention and control as a key issue when it comes to the vital role played by uniforms.

Medical uniforms offer a clear boundary between work wear and out of work wear.  In the context of a hospital, a uniform can help to identify staff and offer reassurance to patients.

In the 1970s green medical scrubs became standard for surgeons and their popularity soon spread. Other colours were adopted by hospital staff working in different departments to help distinguish them.

The industry has come a long way and there is now a huge a choice of colours, styles, and personalisation options (such as embroidery). Whether you go for a classic cut or a mock wrap look, a hip pocket or a chest pocket, with a bit of shopping around you’ll be able to find something that you’ll feel confident and comfortable working in.
